Minister of Education Guarantees Strike-Free Academic Calendar, Discloses New Measures

Over the years, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been known for its incessant strikes. Parents and students are often frustrated, as these disruptions of studies tend to be prolonged.

To address this, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has disclosed measures aimed at ending strikes in tertiary institutions and ensuring Nigerian students a strike-free academic calendar.
Specifically addressing the issue, Dr. Alausa noted that the previous administration struggled to resolve disputes with ASUU, the Non-Academic Staff Union, other unions in tertiary institutions, and the Federal Government. He highlighted that even the numerous committees established by the previous administration were unable to resolve these conflicts.
However, the Minister revealed that certain measures have now been put in place. To curtail the situation, he mentioned that the Yayale Ahmed Committee has engaged with all unions, including the non-academic staff. So far, ASUU, COEASU, and the non-academic unions have been actively involved in these discussions.

In a bid to encourage professionalism and innovation, the Minister stated that the Federal Government has selected certain universities and polytechnics to receive ₦200 billion for the construction of engineering workshops.
Furthermore, he reiterated that medical laboratories will be constructed in universities and polytechnics where such facilities currently do not exist.
